Nevada County Live - Rough & Ready

On April 7th, 1850, Rough and Ready seceded from the Union. The Great Republic of Rough & Ready lasted only three months as the worlds smallest nation. On July 4, the same year -"Old Glory" went up the flagpole and Rough & Ready rejoined the Union.  Rough and Ready celebrates "Secession Days" the last Sunday of every June with a small parade, concession stands, music by the Rough & Ready Fruit Jar Pickers, and the annual "Secession Days Play" performed live and on stage in the center of town.

Rough & Ready's climate has an average summer temperature in the 80's and the winter average is in the 40's. approximate elevation is about 1,800 feet "above both fog below the snow", usually! 

California State Historical Landmarks #294 THE LITTLE TOWN OF ROUGH AND READY Established in 1849 and named in honor of General Zachary Taylor, after the Rough and Ready Company of miners from Wisconsin, this was one of the principal towns of Nevada County. In 1850, articles of secession were drawn up establishing the 'Republic of Rough and Ready.' As a result of disastrous fires, only a few structures remain today that were built in the 1850s.
